GRE Basics

If you’re wondering what the heck the GRE is and why you would want to suffer through it, you’re in the right place.

Our GRE basics articles are designed to help you understand the fundamentals of the GRE exam. If you think you have a silly “rookie question” about the GRE, we’ve probably answered it in one of our articles.

Free GRE Quantitative Reasoning Course

The GRE Quantitative Reasoning section consists of 27 questions, split across two sections. These GRE Quant sections feature two main question types: Problem Solving and Quantitative Comparisons. After you finish the GRE, you’ll receive a Quant section score on a scale from 130 to 170. Your Quant score will also be added to your Verbal Reasoning score to produce your overall GRE composite score, on a scale from 260 to 340.

Free GRE Verbal Video Course

The Verbal Reasoning section consists of 27 questions across two sections and features three question types: Reading Comprehension, Text Completion, and Sentence Equivalence. As with the GRE Quant section, you’ll receive a GRE Verbal score on a scale from 130 to 170, and this will be combined with your Quant score to produce your overall composite score, on a scale from 260 to 340.

Want more tips for the GRE Verbal section?

Our Verbal articles will help you select the most useful verbal practice materials. If you’re struggling with your fundamental reading skills, you might want to read our articles about how reading non-fiction or fiction can help improve your scores.

Note: some of the articles here focus primarily on the GMAT, but we’ve selected them for GRE students because the principles in them apply equally to the GRE.

GRE Analytical Writing (AW)

The GRE exam begins with a 30-minute Analytical Writing task, scored on a scale from 0 to 6. The AW score is not included in your GRE composite score.

We have good news for anybody who doesn’t love writing: the Analytical Writing score is rarely a major factor in graduate school admissions, and most test-takers perform adequately on the essay with minimal preparation. As a result, we don’t recommend spending much of your valuable study time on this section.
